Books vs TV. Books win for Us.

Books are educational. When you read, you are experiencing a conversation with the author. David McCullough said, “Writing is thinking. To write well is to think clearly. That’s why it’s so hard.” Writing is thinking on paper by the author and leads to greater thinking by the reader. You may read a book by any author an agree with some of it and disagree with some of it, but you have grown and expanded your mind from the experience. Once your mind has been expanded, stretched and sharpened by a new thought or experience it can never go back to its old size.

Television is mindless media. Most of it is poorly produced. Hollywood can take a blockbuster novel and when they are done with it you won’t recognize it. And there is reality television. Reality television has been around since 1948, when Alan Funt introduced America to Candid Camera. However, it exploded in 2000, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Why would it? Producers and networks love them. The shows are cheaper to produce compared to a scripted show; they bring in the ad revenue and are less likely to be hit with a union strike. So, just like Ray Kinsella hearing a voice in his corn field telling him, “If you build it, they will come.” They create them and we flock like sheep to watch them.
